Christmas Table Runner

Make a Christmas Table Runner to dress your festive table

The blocks are paper foundation pieced using the patterns provided. The runner can be made in several ways depending on the length you want. The blocks joined together with no sashing or border make a 33 inch length. Add sashing between the large blocks to make the runner longer. Two 5 inch pieces will make the runner 43 inches without the borders. This alters how much fabric you need.

You will need:

  • scraps in creams, off whites, pale golds.
  • 1m background fabric (also makes the backing)
  • 45 x 15 inch piece of batting (You could use iron on Pellon™)

Kathryn (student) made this version when she was a real beginner. I love the colour choices, but it will be beautiful in any colourway, of course.

To make the blocks, download and print the patterns on tracing paper or typing paper (you can buy these from Office Works or similar stores). Join the patterns where necessary, and sew.

Important!

DO NOT print the patterns using Size to fit option, they will be slightly smaller than you are expecting.

Add sashing (lattice) strips between each of the three large blocks if you wish to make the runner longer. Join the blocks together in a long row.

Add 2 inch or 3 inch wide borders. Press.

Assembly

Stack the backing face up, blocks (quilt top) face down, batting on top. Pin all the way around, leaving an opening about 6 inches along one of the long sides.

Stitch with a ¼″ seam, clip the corners, turn, and slip stitch the opening closed.

Press to make good sharp edges, and then stitch ¼″ from the edge all around the runner.

Quilt by hand or machine in gold thread for drama, or red.

Place on your table and wait for the admiration from your Christmas guests!
